Stellenrust Tasting - 21 March '23

On the 21st of March we tasted the wines of the Stellenrust Wine Estate, Anneke Andrew presented. It is always great to have Anneke at Vats, her tastings are informative and her selection fantastic. The following was the tasting and the scores that each wine received.

1. Clement de Lure MCC Sparkling Brut NV (Cabernet Franc, Chenin Blanc & Chardonnay, 3rd each)

Colour- light pink, with fine light mousse. Nose- good brioche, citrus, yeast, cherries and berries, slightly meaty. Palate- crisp acidity, brioche, strawberry, cherries, with lingering fruit on the palate.

Score- 17.33.

2. Stellenrust Chenin Blanc Spumante Sparkling NV (Chenin Blanc & Muscat d’Alexandrie)

Colour- golden green. Nose- honey, peach, apple. Palate- crisp acids, soft peach, apples and honey, with a lingering peach finish.

Score- 16.25.

3. Stellenrust Chenin Blanc 2022 (3rd and 4th fill barrels)

Colour- light green-gold. Nose- tropical, citrus, pineapple, Granny Smith apples. Palate- pineapple, citrus, soft tropical fruit, pears and peach, with an apple finish.

Score- 16.67.

4. Stellenrust Simplicity 2021 (Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot)

Colour- inky dark red, with almost no gradation to the rim. Nose- toffee, chocolate, black cherries. Palate- crisp acidity, firm tannins, black cherries, cassis, chocolate, cedar box, with cassis and cherries on the finish.

Score- 16.70.

5. Stellenrust Premium Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Colour- inky deep red, gradating to a pale red rim. Nose- pepper, cassis, mint, black cherries. Palate- crisp acidity, black cherries, chocolate, cedar box, minty, black currant, with lingering chocolate and cassis on the finish.

Score- 17.30 (seventh highest scoring wine for Vats so far for 2023).

6. Stellenrust Barrel Selection Timeless Red Blend 2019 (43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot & 16% Cabernet Franc)

Colour- inky dark red with no gradation to the rim. Nose- eucalyptus, mint, chocolate, black cherries, liquorice, caramel and savoury. Palate- crisp acidity, soft, black cherries and berries, cassis, cedar box, dark chocolate, cocoa, with lingering dark chocolate and cherries on the finish.

Score- 17.70 (3rd highest scored wine so far for 2023).

Wow what a tasting of beautiful wines! Thanks to Anneke for bringing such a top selection. Two top ten’s for Stellenrust in the tasting for 2023. 3rd for the Timeless and seventh for the Cabernet Sauvignon, pretty awesome, well done Stellenrust!
