On the 15th of October Oliver Wright, presented a few of the wines of Bon Courage to us. This was Oliver’s first tasting, that he presented. And a mighty fine presentation, filled with information of the farm and the wines, with a great presentation on the TV too! At first we had to overcome some Gremlin’s with the TV, which was sorted with the help of another member. The following is the order that we tasted the wines, the comments and the average scores.

  1. Jacques Bruere Vintage Cap Classique Blanc de Blancs 2012 (100% Chardonnay)

Colour- light golden, fine mousse. Nose- pancake, brioche, savoury, meaty, citrus, honey, lime. Palate- crisp acidity, soft, honey, pineapple, citrus, yeasty, toast lingering to the finish.

Score- 16.15.

2. Jacques Bruere Vintage CC Brut Reserve 2015 (60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay)

Colour- light green, gradating to a golden rim, fine mousse. Nose- floral, wet wool, citrus, brioche. Palate- crisp acidity, acid forward, brioche, honey, citrus, lemon.

Score- 16.58.

3. The Gooseberry Bush Sauvignon Blanc 2024

Colour- light green. Nose- guava, passion fruit, citrus, green pepper. Palate- crisp acidity, gooseberry, guava, citrus, tropical, passion fruit, soft.

Score- 15.85.

4. Lady of the House Pinotage Rose 2023

Colour- light pink. Nose- black and red berry, black and red cherry, Turkish delight, strawberry. Palate- crisp acidity, loads of cherry and berry, butterscotch, strawberry, Turkish delight, red cherry on the finish.

Score- 16.00.

5. Limited Release Inkara Shiraz 2021

Colour- inky dark red, with no gradation to a pink rim. Nose- Christmas cake, marzipan, caramel, toffee, black cherry and berry, mulberry, sundried tomatoes. Palate- crisp acidity, soft but firm tannins, sundried tomatoes, savoury, black pepper, cloves, spice, green herbs, black cherry.

Score- 17.08.

The Cap Classique’s very typical of Brut and Blanc de Blanc, mixed scores and comments though. The soft Sauvignon wasn’t well received and scored low. Top wine the lovely complex Inkara Shiraz followed up by the two Cap Classique’s. Lovely tasting, thanks kindly Oliver. We shall definitely ask you to present again!
