On the 19th of November, Mario Monteiro brought the wines of the Mellish Family Vineyards to us. This is the first time many of us have tasted these wines, and many had never even heard of them. Mario, is a brilliant presenter, with his wealth of knowledge from his days as a sommelier, makes his tastings are a real treat. He always makes the tastings real informative and interesting. It is always lovely to taste wines from an Estate you have never heard of and really were quite unaware of. The following is the order we tasted the wines in, the comments of the tasters and the average scores.

  1. Chenin Blanc 2023

Colour- light green, with a tinge of hay colour. Nose- honey suckle, citrus, peach, pear, pineapple, melon. Palate- crisp acidity, melon, waxy, citrus with lime, honey from the wild ferment, pear, pineapple that lingers to the finish.

Score- 16.23.

2. Sauvignon Blanc 2021 (Wooded)

Colour- light green, with a golden rim. Nose- floral, cedar, lanolin, dusty, citrus, nettles, grass, grapefruit. Palate- crisp acidity, grass, asparagus, green bell peppers, citrus, cedar, oily mouth feel, peach, butterscotch.

Score- 16.07.

3. Pinotage 2023

Colour-light red from the heart to the rim. Nose- meaty, cardamom, caramel, mulberry, prune, red cherry, black cherry and currant. Palate- crisp acidity, firm tannins, savoury, almond, plum, black berry and cherry, raspberry, cherry finish.

Score- 16.62.

4. Cinsault 2020

Colour- inky black-red, with no gradation to a clear rim. Nose- stinky, citrus, caramel, forest floor, liquorice, marzipan, raspberry, black cherry. Palate- crisp acidity, soft but firm tannins, Maraschino cherry, salty, black tea, black currant, with a dried fruit finish.

Score- 16.07.

5. Syrah 2021

Colour- inky purple-red, with no gradation to the rim. Nose- floral, citrus, black currant, cassis. Palate- crisp acidity, firm tannins, spice, olives, black currant, black berry and cherry, spice and cherry on the finish, young needs time.

Score- 16.21.

6. Syrah 2020

Colour- inky black-purple-red, with no gradation to the rim. Nose- savoury, sundried tomatoes, cedar, smoke, plums. Palate- crisp acidity, soft but firm tannins, spice, black pepper, sundried tomatoes, closed, plums, lacking fruit(?). Conclusion of tasters that this wine was more closed, still too young needs time to open up. The younger Syrah showed more fruit. The older one will develop better and is more characteristic of Syrah.

Score- 16.43.

Definitely an interesting tasting, with a Blanc Fume and a Cinsault. Some real nice wines, which I felt were scored a bit more harshly, because people don’t know them. There is quality there and the reds need time to develop as they are still a bit closed and tight. Top wine the Pinotage, followed by the 2020 Syrah and narrowly by the Chenin Blanc (by 0.02 on the 2021 Syrah). Thanks Mario for bringing us something new. Interesting wines that we need to keep an eye on and watch as they develop.
